ParticipantI’m trying to understand the difference between WooCommerce memberships and subscriptions.
From what I understand, memberships are mainly used to provide customers with access to exclusive content, products, discounts, or other member-only benefits, while subscriptions are focused on recurring payments for products or services.
But I’m still confused about when a store should use one over the other.
- What are the main differences between WooCommerce memberships and subscriptions?
- Can they be used together?
- Which option is better for selling recurring products or services?
- Which is better for creating a members-only store or exclusive content?
I’d appreciate insights from anyone who has implemented either setup in WooCommerce.

Devin WilliamsParticipantThe main difference is what you are charging customers for.
WooCommerce Subscriptions are primarily for recurring payments. For example, if you sell a monthly coffee box, software access, maintenance service, or any product that customers pay for every month/year, subscriptions are the better fit.
WooCommerce Memberships are primarily for access and benefits. You can use memberships to restrict content or products, offer member-only discounts, provide exclusive access, or create different membership levels.
They can also work together. For example, you could sell a monthly subscription that automatically gives the customer a premium membership. When the subscription is cancelled or expires, the membership access can also be removed.
A simple way to think about it:
Subscription = recurring payment
Membership = customer access/benefits
Subscription + Membership = recurring payment with ongoing member benefits
So, if your main goal is recurring revenue, choose subscriptions. If your goal is exclusive access or member benefits, choose memberships. If you need both, combining them can create a more complete customer experience.You can also use Subscriptions for WooCommerce to combine recurring payments with membership benefits. Its Manage Membership With Access Rules feature lets you create membership plans, restrict content/products, offer exclusive access, track performance with analytics, and control visibility at the Gutenberg block level.
