Trying to offer free shipping on my WooCommerce subscription products, but I’m not sure how recurring orders handle delivery charges. Free shipping shows up fine on the first order, but I want to make sure renewals don’t get charged shipping later. What’s the correct way to set this up with shipping zones, and are there any settings I’m likely to miss? Looking for a reliable setup that works for both the initial order and renewals.
Yes, it’s done through WooCommerce’s normal shipping zones — the only tricky part is renewals.
- Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Shipping → Shipping zones and make sure a zone covers your subscription regions (overlapping/missing zones is the usual reason it doesn’t show).
- Add the Free shipping method to that zone, set it as unconditional or use a minimum-order threshold.
- Assign your subscription products to that zone.
- The catch: whether renewals also ship free depends on your subscription plugin. Most reuse the original order’s shipping, so renewals stay free, but coupon-based free shipping often won’t reapply on renewals. Stick to threshold/unconditional for recurring orders.
- Test a real order and a test renewal to confirm both are free.
If renewals are still getting charged, it’s usually the subscription plugin recalculating shipping each cycle, check its renewal/shipping settings.
