Checkout is slower than other pages because it can’t be fully cached. It runs dynamic requests for cart totals, shipping rates, and payment gateways on every load.

Work through these in order for eCommerce checkout optimization:

1. Test first: run the page through PageSpeed Insights or GTmetrix, and use Query Monitor to spot slow database queries or plugins.
2. Exclude checkout from page caching: cart, checkout, and my-account pages should be excluded, but everything else (images, CSS, JS) should still be cached and served through a CDN.
3. Remove unused scripts from checkout: many plugins load their CSS and JS on every page. Dequeue anything that isn’t needed on checkout.
4. Reduce third party calls: live shipping rate lookups, fraud checks, and chat widgets all add wait time. Limit them or load them after the main content.
5. Upgrade your stack: use a current PHP version, enable object caching (Redis or Memcached), and check your hosting plan handles simultaneous checkouts, especially before sale periods.
6. Optimize the database: clean expired transients, old sessions, and post revisions regularly.

Also consider trimming checkout fields you don’t need. Fewer fields means a faster page and a shorter form.
