October 1, 2026 at 12:53 pm in reply to: Why Is My WooCommerce Site Down After a Plugin or Theme Update? #5269

ParticipantThis is the classic “White Screen of Death” or critical error, and it almost always traces back to a plugin or theme conflict after an update. Work through this quickly since every minute down costs sales:
- Enable debug mode first, add define(‘WP_DEBUG’, true); and define(‘WP_DEBUG_LOG’, true); to wp-config.php to see the actual PHP error instead of a blank screen, then check wp-content/debug.log.
- Access via FTP or your host’s file manager, since wp-admin may be unreachable. Rename the plugin folder that was just updated (add “.old” to the folder name) to deactivate it instantly without needing admin access.
- If the site comes back, the plugin is the cause. Check if an updated version is available, or roll back to the previous version using a plugin like WP Rollback.
- If renaming the plugin folder doesn’t fix it, rename the active theme folder too, WordPress will fall back to a default theme if the current one is broken.
- Restore from backup as a last resort if nothing above works, which is why taking a backup before any update is non negotiable.
- Test updates on a staging site going forward, most hosts offer one click staging, so plugin and theme updates never hit your live store first.
Before every festive season or major sale, update and test all plugins on staging at least a week ahead, not the week of.
