Devin WilliamsParticipantI’m thinking about setting up a referral program to get our current customers to bring in their friends. Do people actually share these referral links, or do they just get ignored? I’d love to hear if it actually moved the needle for your store’s traffic and sales, or if it just isn’t worth the setup hassle.

ParticipantYes, referral rewards do work for WooCommerce stores, but they usually fail when store owners treat them as a “set it and forget it” feature. The reason referrals perform well is simple: people trust recommendations from friends more than ads. Referred customers also tend to convert better and often have stronger long-term value compared to cold traffic.
What I’ve seen across eCommerce stores is that success depends on a few things:
- Keep rewards simple and valuable
- Reward both the referrer and the new customer
- Make sharing easy (links, points, coupons, etc.)
- Show referral options after purchase, not hidden in account pages
Many store owners in community discussions mention that the tool itself isn’t the main factor, visibility and the reward structure matter more. Stores often install referral systems and then forget to promote them.
For WooCommerce specifically, a good approach is combining referrals with a broader loyalty system instead of running referrals alone. For example, customers can earn points for purchases, referrals, repeat orders, and other actions. That gives people a reason to stay engaged even after the first referral. Community feedback also shows that smaller, ongoing rewards often outperform huge one-time discounts.
If you’re looking for a practical option, Points and Rewards for WooCommerce Plugin is worth checking out. It lets you create referral rewards along with points-based loyalty features, coupons, and customer engagement incentives in one place instead of managing multiple systems.
