ParticipantFraud typically shows a pattern once you know what to look for: mismatched billing/shipping address, unusually large order values from a new account, rushed shipping on a first order, or multiple failed card attempts before a successful one. To reduce exposure:
- Enable AVS and CVV checks on your payment gateway, most gateways support this natively, it just isn’t always turned on by default.
- Flag high risk order patterns manually at first, large first time orders, mismatched addresses, or unusual shipping urgency, and hold them for manual review before fulfillment.
- Use 3D Secure where your gateway supports it, it shifts chargeback liability away from you in most cases.
- Watch for repeated failed payment attempts from the same IP or card range, this is a strong fraud signal.
- Require account verification for high value orders, email and phone verification adds friction for fraudsters without hurting genuine customers much.
- Keep a blocklist of flagged emails, IPs, and shipping addresses tied to past fraudulent orders.
I’d recommend reading WP Swings’ guide on this, it goes deeper into setting up these checks step by step: WooCommerce Fraud Prevention: What All You Need To Know
