ParticipantThis error means WordPress can’t reach the database, and it’s usually one of these five causes:
- Wrong database credentials: check wp-config.php for the DB name, username, password, and host. This happens most often after a migration or a hosting change.
- Database server is down: contact your host, this is common during high traffic spikes or server maintenance.
- Corrupted database: WordPress will sometimes show “One or more database tables are unavailable” instead, try repairing via wp-config.php with define(‘WP_ALLOW_REPAIR’, true);, then visit /wp-admin/maint/repair.php.
- Exceeded database connection limits: shared hosting plans cap concurrent connections. If this happens during traffic spikes or sales, it’s a sign you need a better hosting plan before your next big sale.
- Corrupted core files: re-upload fresh WordPress core files (not plugins or themes) if nothing else resolves it.
Always take a backup before touching wp-config.php or running repairs. If this happened during a traffic spike, it’s worth stress testing your hosting before your next festive sale so you’re not caught off guard again.
