I want to move my Magento store to WooCommerce because of the maintenance cost, but I’m worried about losing my Google rankings and order history.
What’s the safest way to migrate products, customers, and orders?
A Magento to WooCommerce migration is very doable, and most ranking losses come from skipped planning rather than the platform change itself. Start by taking a full backup and exporting your URLs, products, categories, customers, orders, and reviews, and note your top traffic pages from Google Search Console.
Build the new store on a staging site first, then migrate data in stages (products and categories, then customers, then orders), checking prices, variations, images, and stock after each stage.
The biggest factor in keeping your rankings is your URL structure. Match your old URLs where you can, and where you can’t, set up a 301 redirect from every old URL to its new equivalent. Carry over page titles, meta descriptions, image alt text, and your XML sitemap too. Before launch, list everything your Magento store did (payment gateways, shipping rules, tax, coupons, emails) and confirm each has a WooCommerce equivalent, then place test orders with every payment method and shipping zone.
Launch during a quiet period, not in the middle of a sale, and watch Search Console for 404s and crawl errors for a few weeks afterwards so you can fix any missed redirects quickly. For a walkthrough, see: Magento 1 End-Of-Life: How To Migrate Magento To WooCommerce?
